New Mexico currently has one of the worst doctor shortages in the U.S. Nearly 40% of the state's doctors are 60 or older and set to retire by 2030, just as the large generation of baby boomers demands more care than ever.
To tackle this shortage, the state has dropped a game-changing 10-point plan. From slashing licensing red tape to creating incentives like loan repayment programs and streamlined pathways for international medical graduates, this plan is all about making New Mexico a healthcare magnet.

Breaking Barriers: Licensing Across State and International Lines
The proposed New Mexico program makes it easier for out-of-state doctors, psychologists, and other providers to treat New Mexico patients, including via telehealth. And it goes further: Fully trained international doctors could snag a provisional license to practice under supervision for two years, paving the way for a full medical license.
U.S. healthcare professionals can practice across multiple states under interstate healthcare worker compacts. These agreements cover professionals such as physicians, nurses, psychologists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, emergency medical personnel, veterinarians, and dentists.
Currently, New Mexico is not a party to any of these compacts—with the exception of the Nurse Licensure Compact. However, under the proposed plan, New Mexico would join the majority of U.S. states in embracing the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. This would allow physicians to apply for licensure in multiple member states using a single application, rather than submitting separate applications for each state.
New Mexico would also join compacts for other healthcare providers, including psychologists, physical therapists, and dentists.
