Teacher’s Inappropriate Yearbook Comments Result in Two-Year Suspension
An Arizona high school teacher was suspended for two years after an investigation revealed he made inappropriate comments to students.
The teacher was placed on administrative leave in October 2023, after administrators at Mesa High School received complaints that he had dressed up as the devil and said “Hail Satan” to several students.
While this appears to have been a case of excessive enthusiasm for the school’s Halloween Spirit Week, the investigation also revealed that the teacher had crossed boundaries with students at Skyline High School earlier in the year. In this instance, the teacher had written suggestive and unprofessional comments in students’ yearbooks, including sexual innuendos and references to drug use.
The two-year suspension was part of a settlement agreement between the teacher and Arizona’s State Board of Education.
While this teacher will have the opportunity to continue his career down the road, some teachers aren’t so lucky.
Educators accused of professional misconduct can quickly find themselves in deeply challenging situations, and state agencies are not likely to guide them through it. What Actions Can Put My Teacher’s License At Risk?
While every state has its own processes and procedures, there are a number of actions and behaviors that can endanger your teaching career, regardless of where you live. These can include:
- Inappropriate relationships with students
- Drug and alcohol use
- Criminal activity
- Student abuse and neglect
- Discrimination and Title IX violations
- Misuse of school funds and resources
- Violations of your state’s Code of Ethics
More importantly, however, is that many issues start because of a complaint from a student or parent. That means that even the smallest incidents can grow into something larger and result in administrative suspensions while the incident is investigated.
Getting ahead of the narrative in these instances can be crucial to the outcome, and that’s where the LLF National Law Firm can help.
Protecting Your License, Rebuilding Your Teaching Career
Taking steps to ensure your teaching license is legally defensible is a smart strategy that can help you protect your career. Pursuing additional certifications, consistently meeting or exceeding your state’s CE requirements, and erring on the side of caution when it comes to interactions with your students are all good examples of ways you can safeguard your license.
Seeking professional help is an important step on that list, too, but one that some teachers ignore, especially if the complaint seems minor or doesn’t appear to have any merit.
The problem is that allegations like this can evolve quickly, and what seemed to be a simple misunderstanding yesterday can become a potential suspension or revocation tomorrow.
Don’t try to navigate these challenges alone. Working with our Professional License Defense Team can alleviate stress and help you present your best defense. The LLF National Law Firm has been assisting teachers and educators across the country for many years.
