Substance Abuse Leads to Loss of Doctor’s Career and Daughter’s Death

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 18, 2025 | 0 Comments

Licensed medical professionals—doctors, pharmacists, anesthesiologists, therapists, and others—are bound by ethical codes and regulatory standards. After years-long investments in rigorous academic and on-the-job training, they build trusted reputations that are integral to their communities. Yet, the pressures of their work increase their vulnerability to substance misuse.

When addiction takes hold, they risk not only harming themselves and others but also jeopardizing their professional licenses and, thus, their careers. Medical professionals managing career-ending implications must call the Lento Law Firm Professional License Defense Team for help now at 888-535-3686 or fill out our confidential consultation form.

Alabama Anesthesiologist's Tragic Career End

In February 2025, a former Mountain Brook, Alabama, anesthesiologist stood before a judge to enter a plea in a heart-wrenching case involving the death of her 10-year-old daughter in a car crash. On July 22, 2023, an officer recorded Sarah “Kathleen” Cumbest Mullican speeding in her SUV and saw it swerve out of its lane several times, nearly striking one vehicle. The officer then attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the SUV fled for a short distance, swerving off the road and striking several trees before overturning into a ditch.

Mullican was charged with speeding, eluding, and driving under the influence of controlled substances—some of which were prescribed and some of which were not. She was also charged with manslaughter in the reckless death of her daughter. Mullican voluntarily surrendered her medical license before the imposition of concurrent prison sentences.

Licensing Boards Levy Sanctions for Substance Abuse

Substance abuse, whether it involves alcohol, prescription medications, or illicit drugs, does not discriminate by profession, social standing, or family background. For medical professionals like Mullican, it can be the origin of a personal catastrophe and a professional crisis.

Licensed professionals embroiled in such a tragedy must confront investigations from both law enforcement and professional boards. A state's medical board can levy sanctions for substantiated reports of driving under the influence, excessive alcohol consumption, and substance abuse. Punishments can include probation, limiting a practitioner's scope of authority, and taking away some of their responsibilities over patients and assistive personnel. However, situations that involve serious bodily injury or death or those that warrant prison time often end in a license suspension or revocation.

Sadly, the aftermath shows how substance abuse can shatter more than one life. Family members, friends, patients, and colleagues grapple with the repercussions. In many cases, rehabilitating a reputation that was integral to the community is all but impossible, with consequences often accompanying tragic outcomes.
