States That Leave Multi-State Licensure Compacts Put Careers at Risk
Thousands of Michigan doctors were within days of losing their licenses to practice before state lawmakers, who seemed lost in a procedural quagmire they themselves created over two very chaotic years, finally came to an agreement about rejoining the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact.
It was a winding road to get to this resolution, but the result means Michigan patients can count on their doctors staying put, at least for now. Out of an abundance of caution, the organization that runs the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact says, given the legislature’s proven fecklessness, it won’t allow any more doctors with Michigan credentials to sign up, and it won’t authorize any new Michigan licenses.
The whole mess is a sad reminder to doctors, nurses, and other licensed healthcare workers in Michigan and other states that relying on state legislatures for administrative stability is a fool’s errand: Any healthcare provider with a multi-state practice can see it dismantled overnight by legislative incompetence or confusion.
The LLF National Law Firm’s Professional License Defense Team can help. We work with doctors, nurses, counselors, physical therapists, and others nationwide, helping them protect their licenses and their careers whenever they’re threatened by capricious or mendacious administrative decision-making. When States Leave a Licensure Compact, We Can Help
If your state leaves a compact — the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), if you’re a nurse, for instance, or the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (MLC) if you’re a doctor — your “privilege to practice” as a licensed healthcare professional in other states evaporates. The Professional License Defense Team at LLF National Law Firm understands how to navigate complex, multi-state licensure agreements and what it takes to protect your license when the compact falls apart.
We’re positioned to see the big picture with these compacts because we’re a nationwide law firm, representing healthcare professionals in every state and U.S. territory. We know that protecting a professional license when a compact goes sideways requires two views of the field:
- The unique rules and processes governing the licensing board in a given state, and
- The rules and processes of the compact that oversees your ability to practice in other states, and how these intersect with the rules and processes of member states
In other words, we’re able to help a surgical nurse in New Mexico when their state leaves the NLC, an allergist in Vermont when that state leaves the MLC, and a nurse practitioner in Iowa, should it do likewise, all because we work with professionals across specialties and across state lines.
Protecting Your License When Your State Pulls Out
Without intervention, a state’s withdrawal from a multi-state licensing compact can disrupt your ability to get, or keep, a license to practice in other states. The lapse can mean untreated patients and shuttered clinics — and lasting career damage for the practitioner.
The Professional License Defense Team at the LLF National Law Firm will ensure you don’t fall through the legislative cracks. When your multi-state compact falls apart, we’ll guide you through your reinstatement process, coordinating all the documentation and compliance you’ll have to go through, and negotiating with the relevant boards.
If your multi-state licensure compact looks shaky, contact us right away. Send us a message online and tell us about your situation, or call us directly at 888-535-3686.
