When a trusted professional does something unethical, it erodes trust in the entire profession. The fallout impacts everyone—including you.

Recap of the Jason Valiant Case

Jason Valiant, a Florida-based realtor, was arrested in December 2024 and charged with exploitation of elderly adults, grand theft, and illegal misuse of credit cards. He's accused of exploiting an elderly Ormond Beach, Florida couple by forging documents to will himself $1.6 million in oceanfront property.

Valiant has a prior history of unethical behavior. Valiant's real estate license was revoked in 2018 despite having operated in Florida for 22 years and claiming to have sold $400 million in assets.

What the Jason Valiant Case Means for Realtors

Realtors are bound by law to act in their client's interests. Florida Statute 825.103 prohibits the exploitation of vulnerable adults, with severe penalties for violations.

Valiant's actions abuse power while in a position of trust. The financial exploitation of $1.6 million passes felony threshold standards in the State of Florida. The legal documents he allegedly forged, including power of attorney and DNR orders, breach both ethical and legal standards.

Apart from criminal charges, Valiant can face permanent suspension, fines, and permanent revocation of his license.

What to Do If You Face an Investigation

When you're under a board investigation, knowing what to do and acting fast can protect your license, your reputation, and your career.

If that happens, here are some steps you can take to safeguard yourself and protect your livelihood:

  1. Act Promptly - Find legal counsel immediately. They can advise you on your rights and obligations and guide you through what to do next.
  2. Cooperate Thoughtfully - Work with the board rather than against them. Respond to their inquiries professionally, but avoid incriminating yourself.
  3. Document Thoroughly - Collect all of your relevant records and evidence related to the investigation and give them to your legal counsel to prepare your defense.
  4. Maintain Confidentiality - Avoid discussing your case openly, whether in public or with colleagues. Your legal counsel will advise you on how much or how little to give away while the investigation is pending.
