Federal agents claimed that several now-shuttered nursing schools—Siena College, Sacred Heart International, and Palm Beach School of Nursing—were selling diplomas and transcripts to people who never actually completed the required coursework. The numbers were big: over 7,000 fake diplomas, according to federal prosecutors

From there, the fallout spread like wildfire. States across the country began combing through nursing licenses. Maryland was no exception.

A state audit found that 259 Maryland nurses with links to the schools named in Operation Nightingale still held active Maryland licenses as of February 2024.
