Online Licensing System Improves Professional Licensing Process in Illinois
Licensed professionals are essential to many industries, and millions of people rely on their licenses for work. That’s why the Illinois state government moved to optimize its licensing process, making it faster and more efficient.
Still, the rules are the same, and there’s always potential for errors, especially while the current process is new. If you have questions about your professional license or need help fighting a complaint filed against you, call the LLF National Law Firm Professional License Defense Team at 888.535.3686 or fill out this contact form.
Illinois’ New and Improved Professional Licensing Process
Previously, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) required all professional licensing applications to be submitted by mail. Unfortunately, it came to overwhelm the department, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the United States Postal Service had to deal with a combination of employee absenteeism and surging package volume. As a result, the system is severely backlogged, forcing current and aspiring professionals alike to endure “historic wait times” to obtain or renew their licenses.
Luckily, in December 2023, the Illinois legislature passed a law allowing the licensing process to become more modernized. As of October 2024, online licensing applications are available to nail technicians, music therapists, and clinical psychologists. In March 2025, lawmakers outlined the IDFPR’s six-phase plan to create online licensing applications for every other professional industry as well. So far, the vast majority of applicants have given positive reviews of the new system.
What the New System Could Mean for You
While the online system is reducing wait times and providing more options for licensees to track, review, and pay for their applications, there are potential pitfalls that every licensed professional in Illinois should understand.
For example, a lot of the process will now be automated. This could make it harder to catch or correct errors. Also, computers don’t have the capacity for nuanced reading comprehension that humans do; if there’s anything on your application that seems questionable, you could be denied approval or renewal without a proper review. If that happens, you’ll have to figure out how to appeal or contact the right party to fix the problem, which might be even more confusing, expensive, and time-consuming than the original mail-in process.
Knowing that all kinds of things can go wrong online, you need backup to help you clear any obstacles that could arise between you and your career. That’s what the LLF National Law Firm Professional License Defense Team can do for you, using the law to support your hard work and rights as a licensed professional.
