Marc Rinard, a nurse in Spokane County, Washington, had his license suspended after being charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault following a road rage incident on August 18. According to the Washington State Department of Health, Rinard allegedly shot at a couple in another car at a traffic light, fatally hitting the driver in the chest. Rinard fled the scene but was later arrested at his home.
Authorities confirmed that Rinard did not know the victim and was driving erratically before the shooting. However, a search of Rinard's phone shows that he researched videos showing how to shoot a gun from a car prior to the shooting. He appeared in Spokane County District Court on August 19, pleading "not guilty" via Zoom. His bail was set at $5 million, and he remains in jail. The Washington State Board of Nursing suspended Rinard's nursing license while the legal process continues. Rinard has 20 days to contest the suspension.

Why License Suspension Usually Follows Criminal Charges
In light of their responsibility for the well-being of others, nursing professionals are held to high standards of ethical conduct. When criminal legal allegations arise, particularly those involving violence and firearms, they trigger concerns about the individual's judgment and fitness to care for patients.
Like most other states, Washington's Board of Nursing prohibits nurses charged with serious crimes from practicing nursing while under investigation. Suspending a nurse's license under these circumstances helps protect the public from potential harm until the legal process determines the validity of the charges. This precautionary measure is essential in maintaining the public's trust in healthcare professionals and ensuring that individuals with pending criminal charges do not engage in patient care.
In addition, nursing licensing boards often take immediate action when a professional's behavior calls into question their moral and ethical judgment, whether in or outside their professional duties. In Rinard's case, the alleged road rage incident involved life-threatening violence, which starkly contrasts the role of a nurse, whose primary duty is to protect and heal. By suspending his license before the trial, the Washington State Board of Nursing is upholding its commitment to public safety and professional accountability.
