Nursing License in Jeopardy? What Two Recent Cases Reveal
Nurses show up for patients, families, and their teams—day after day. They make life-and-death calls, often while carrying their own private struggles. And yet, when mistakes happen, the system doesn’t always make room for their humanity. Just ask Julie Porter and Jennifer Melcher. Both Iowa nurses recently faced disciplinary action by the Iowa Board of Nursing. And while their stories are very different, they share a common thread: how fast things can spiral when the Board gets involved.

A Split-Second Decision with Lasting Consequences
Julie Porter was working a night shift when she documented a patient assessment she didn’t perform. Surveillance footage showed her at the nurses’ station, not with the patient.
That moment, whatever the reason, led to a conviction for dependent adult abuse and tampering with records. The patient’s condition had worsened, and the state pressed charges. Porter received a deferred judgment, probation, and, eventually, surrendered her license.
It’s easy to cast judgment from the outside. But nurses know the truth: split-second decisions under stress are part of the job. Mistakes can happen. And once criminal charges enter the picture, the Board follows quickly and harshly.
When Substance Use Becomes a Legal Minefield
Jennifer Melcher’s case is different but just as sobering. She was twice charged with “excessive use of drugs” by the Board based on alleged repeated marijuana use and a co-worker reports of impairment. No employer was named, and no specific patient harm was disclosed.
Melcher had already agreed to an indefinite license suspension in 2024. Then came a 2025 DUI arrest, her third, after a single-vehicle crash. With a history of substance-related charges, she agreed again to surrender her license, avoiding further Board action.
For nurses struggling with substance use or even just facing accusations, this case is a stark reminder: the Board takes these cases seriously.
Here’s What You Need to Know
If you’re a nurse under investigation, the process can feel one-sided.
But you have rights, and you have options. Sometimes the smartest move is to get legal guidance before you say a word. Sometimes it’s choosing to get help—before you’re forced to. Facing the truth with the right support can shift everything. Showing that you’re taking responsibility through treatment or counseling can improve your outcome with the board.
Whether you’re facing a criminal charge, an allegation of drug use, a documentation error, mental health issues, or financial challenges, it’s critical to get legal support early.
