If you get accused of professional misconduct as a healthcare provider, you'll most likely be ordered to pay civil penalties, which can add up. But monetary penalties aren't all that's at stake. Losing your license could ultimately prevent you from working, which can end up costing you much more in the long run. A Nebraska nurse recently found herself in this situation after being accused of misconduct.

Suspended Nebraska Nurse Loses Her License
A Nebraska nurse recently had her license revoked after being charged with practicing nursing while suspended and on probation. The nurse in question, Andrea Meisinger, was suspended in May 2024 after the Nebraska Attorney General's Office filed a petition complaining that she was attempting to sell weight-loss medications without establishing a prior patient/provider relationship. Six months later, she was accused of holding virtual appointments with a Nebraska patient, prescribing medications in states where she doesn't hold a license, shipping patient prescriptions to her home, and authorizing dozens of prescriptions to Nebraska patients—all with a suspended license.
Meisinger was officially accused of:
- Immoral or dishonorable conduct
- The practice of the profession fraudulently
- Unprofessional conduct
In addition to having her license revoked, Meisinger must also pay a $16,000 civil penalty. She already had to pay $3,000 back in May when she was suspended and put on probation. She'll now be responsible for $19,000 in penalties, which she's expected to pay although she can no longer practice her chosen profession of nursing.
What to Do If You're Accused of Misconduct as a Licensed Nurse
You shouldn't take an accusation of misconduct lightly. It's not a criminal charge, and you won't have to appear in court—but you might have to go to a hearing before your state's nursing board. You could also lose your license and have to pay a heavy fee. In some cases, your board might even force you to give up your license permanently.
If you get accused of misconduct, you should contact the Professional License Defense Team at the Lento Law Firm. We can help you prepare a defense and present evidence and arguments in your favor with the board. We can also help you make sense of the complex disciplinary process that your state nursing board likely has for dealing with misconduct cases.
