Paramedic Faces Criminal Charges and License Suspension for Stealing Opioids

The Iowa Capital Dispatch reported that a Carroll County paramedic is charged with stealing fentanyl from an ambulance service and replacing the stolen painkiller with saline. Teresa Marie Johnson faces felony charges for unlawfully obtaining a controlled substance through fraud or deceit. She has also been accused of multiple drug-related misdemeanors.

Iowa’s Bureau of Emergency and Medical Trauma Services (the board) oversees paramedic licensing and has suspended Johnson’s license by emergency order, alleging that Johnson poses an immediate threat to public safety. The board believes that Johnson removed fentanyl from three vials, replaced the painkiller with saline, and then glued the caps back on the containers. Additionally, she is accused of taking one full vial of fentanyl.

For licensed medical professionals, their proximity to medication, such as fentanyl, can lead to devastating personal and professional consequences, including drug use and addiction.
