Doctor's License Suspended for One Year as a Result of Inappropriate Relationship

A doctor working at the student health center at Mississippi State University admitted that he had a sexual relationship with a student. The doctor started treating her while she was an undergraduate; later, when she was in graduate school, a sexual relationship developed. The doctor testified that when the sexual relationship began, he had transitioned her care to other physicians and stopped writing her prescriptions. He believed that the physician/patient relationship had ended. However, there was no written record that the doctor formally terminated the professional relationship, and the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure found that the doctor engaged in professional misconduct. The Board suspended the doctor's medical license for one year and ordered him to undergo rehabilitative treatment focused on medical ethics, professionalism, and boundary training.

Physician/Patient Relationships Are a Minefield

This matter demonstrates the complicated nature of relationships between doctors and their patients. Although the doctor had taken steps to curtail his treatment of the patient, the state medical licensure board found that the physician/patient relationship had not been terminated.
