Georgia has passed House Bill 148, also known as the Public Accountancy Act of 2025, which introduces new ways to get a CPA license. The law will become effective January 1, 2026. The bill aims to address a shortage of accounting professionals in the state by offering more flexible routes to licensure, including:
- A master's degree and one year of relevant experience.
- A bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience
Both cases would require passing the CPA exam.
The bill also broadens practice privileges for out-of-state CPAs, making it easier for them to practice in Georgia. But Georgia isn't the only state to pass a law like this one, so far this year seven different states have passed alternative CPA licensure laws aimed at easing the accounting professional's shortage in their respective jurisdictions, including Indiana.

Overcoming Licensing or Renewal Hurdles
Different states adding new requirements to acquire or renew your CPA license can make the process more confusing. There are educational requirements, experience requirements, sometimes an ethics exam, and background checks, and they all require specific information filled out in a very specific way. Submitting an incomplete or inaccurate application can be the difference between licensure and not. That's where the Lento Law Firm can help.
We can be your ally at every step of the process, making sure you understand what you need as you are applying for your CPA license, if you need to renew your license, and even if you are sent any type of notification that has to do with your license in any way. Accusations of any type that could affect your CPA license can affect not only your professional reputation but also your livelihood. That's why it's important to take them seriously and never respond to them without understanding what they entail and what you are being accused of.
