Black Woman with Rare Muscle Disorder Is Now a Doctor, Despite Facing Ableism and Other Challenges
Less than 3% of physicians in the US are Black women. And even fewer are Black women with a disability. But Vovanti Jones, a Black woman from Durham, NC, did not let any of that hold her back.
Overcoming ableism, bias, and lack of accommodation, Jones worked hard to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. Today, at 36 years of age, she is an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Missouri (MU), medical director of the inpatient stroke rehab unit at Rusk Rehabilitation Hospital, and co-director of MU's Neuromuscular Clinic.
She is also part of the diversity and inclusion committee for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Her inspiring journey was not without challenges. Jones, who has Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, a rare muscle disorder, recalls being subjected to prejudice due to her disability when a professor gave her a lower grade in medical school because they assumed Jones was not able to do a scalp injection procedure without ever asking her to do it.
Other issues Jones has faced have included hospitals not being designed to accommodate disabilities, prejudice about her capabilities from staff members, and personal challenges.
However, not only does she have a thriving career, but she also makes sure to treat her patients with empathy and understanding and uses her lived experience of disability to understand what her patients are going through.
Although all doctors face challenges – doctors with disabilities have to constantly prove themselves, and often contend with unwarranted and unfair prejudice. This can lead to issues and even complaints, putting your professional license and career at risk.
