Allegations of Sexual Exploits Lands Louisiana Chiropractor in Hot Water with Professional Board

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Mar 16, 2024 | 0 Comments

The Louisiana State Board of Chiropractic Examiners suspended the license of one of its practicing members after a patient, as well as the chiropractor's ex-wife, filed a complaint with the board accusing him of engaging in sexual activity with patients. During divorce proceedings with his ex, Dustin Pelloquin, owner of Pelloquin Chiropractic Wellness Center, admitted to having affairs with at least ten different individuals during his marriage, some of whom were his patients.

The board also found that Pelloquin made false statements on several of his chiropractic license renewal applications, specifically if he had ever been convicted of a crime. Pelloquin had omitted a 2007 arrest for public intoxication. He also had falsely reported attending continuing education classes on his renewal applications when he, in fact, did not attend them. The board suspended his license for at least six months.

Chiropractors Must Abide by Their Boards' Ethical Standards

Like other healthcare professionals, chiropractors are advised to maintain professional boundaries with their patients. Engaging in romantic or intimate relationships with patients can be considered unethical and unprofessional in many healthcare professions, including chiropractic care. And unfortunately, matters of the heart are a common cause of license issues. These behaviors can create conflicts of interest and potentially harm a patient's well-being.

Chiropractic boards and associations often have their own codes of ethics and guidelines that practitioners are expected to adhere to. Violating these ethical standards can result in disciplinary actions, including warnings, fines, suspension, or even revocation of a chiropractor's license, depending on the severity of the misconduct and the laws and regulations in the specific jurisdiction.

Matters of the heart can be problematic, especially when romance blooms between a medical professional and their patient. These relationships are a violation of the professional licensing boards as they put patients at risk. When someone makes a complaint of unethical conduct to a board about one of its members, the board must investigate.

No professional wants to find themselves the target of an investigation by their professional licensing board. The stakes are high — the board has the authority to put your license on probation or, even worse, suspend or revoke your license. If the board suspends or revokes your license, it can bring a quick end to the career you've worked so hard for.
