When we hear of a medical professional losing their license to practice, we may assume that the charge relates to patient care. And that is often the case. But there are other behaviors that can also result in the Board of Nursing suspending a medical license.
Earlier this year, a former dialysis clinic manager who stole money from her employees had her nursing license suspended by the Washington State Department of Health. Jeanne Rather was the manager of two dialysis clinics in Skagit County, Washington. In 2021, Rather was indicted for stealing personally identifying information from at least ten of her employees at the clinics. Rather used the stolen information to fraudulently open up credit card accounts and charge expenses for her family. Rather stole checks from one of the clinics and deposited the funds into her personal bank accounts.
Rather defrauded the clinic of $98,511 and accumulated debt on credit card charges that defrauded a bank of $106,089. In all, Rather's actions resulted in a total loss of more than $204,000. Rather was sentenced to 30 months in prison for Aggravated Identity Theft and Bank Fraud and was ordered to be on a three-year supervised release following her prison sentence. In December of 2023, the Washington State Department of Health suspended Rather's nursing license for a period of at least five years.

Higher Standards For Medical Professionals
As a society, we often hold medical professionals to a higher standard, given that we entrust them with our health and well-being. And every state has a Board of Medical Examiners that works to ensure that medical professionals meet those standards. Certain types of nursing misconduct are regulated by the Boards of Nursing in each state, including complaints regarding the standard of nursing care, drug-related complaints, boundary violations, abuse, fraud, and more. However, nurses, doctors, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals are human, and humans make mistakes. There are many situations where a mistake should not cost you your medical license.
