Washington State Dentist Sanctioned for Unprofessional Conduct
In May, Washington State's Dental Quality Assurance Commission (the Commission) charged Ellis B. Jardine, a dentist in Clark County, with unprofessional conduct, including practicing beyond his expertise and failing to provide standard care protocols. Jardine allegedly administered a general anesthetic to patients despite having only a moderate sedation permit. He was also accused of failing to properly monitor vital signs, failing to properly document his procedures, and improperly administering sedative medications to patients, among other charges.
Jardine's dentist license and moderate sedation with parenteral agents permit was suspended, and he could not practice until there was a resolution to the misconduct allegations. Once notified of the charges against him, Jardine had only 20 days to respond to the allegations and request a hearing.
At the end of June, Jardine and the Commission entered into an Agreed Order. Under the agreement, Jardine's dentistry license and moderate sedation permit are reinstated, with a permanent restriction on extracting wisdom teeth. As part of the Agreed Order, Jardine accepted a series of sanctions, including a $50,000 fine, payment of the Commission's costs, and mandatory enrolment in additional dental training and professional development activities and examinations. Jardine also agreed to allow additional inspections and audits of his practice by an investigator with the Washington State Department of Health.
In Washington State and jurisdictions nationwide, professional misconduct investigations and hearings have far-reaching implications. Any dental or medical professional facing misconduct allegations must take immediate action to defend their license and their livelihood.
