Substance Abuse Can Put Your Nursing License in Jeopardy

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Nov 11, 2024 | 0 Comments

Nurses are under an extreme amount of pressure, especially those who are hired to care for chronically ill children. Unfortunately, this kind of pressure can sometimes cause even the most experienced and professional nurses to violate their professional code of conduct.

When a nurse is accused of violating their professional code of conduct, they run the risk of losing their professional license. Such a punishment can have disastrous consequences for their personal and professional livelihood.

If you or someone you know has been accused of violating their state nursing board's code of conduct, you need a strong defense. Call the Lento Law Firm Professional License Defense today at 888-535-3686 or schedule a consultation online.

Impact of Substance Abuse on Nursing License

There are several ways that a nurse can have their license revoked, restricted, or limited in some other way. However, most issues arise out of accusations of the nurse violating the state board's code of conduct rules. For instance, in August 2024, the Florida Department of Health issued an emergency order to restrict the license of a nurse from The Villages in central Florida.

Allegedly, the nurse had been hired to take care of a 5-year-old girl with cerebral palsy in February 2024. When the parents came home, they found the nurse was extremely intoxicated, bloodied, and bruised. They also saw that their daughter was covered in abrasions, scratches, and bruises.

The parents immediately called the Sheriff's Department, and the nurse was detained and transported to a local hospital for an evaluation. The following day, the hospital discovered that her blood alcohol level was over 316 mg/dl when the legal blood content limit was 80 mg/dl. In the end, the Florida Department of Health determined that the nurse was not capable of caring for patients in the correct and safe manner and that she lacked good judgment and moral character. As such, her nursing license was immediately restricted from practicing nursing until the Intervention Project for Nurses stated otherwise.
