Iowa Dental Board Licenses Dental Assistant Convicted of Theft

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 10, 2025 | 0 Comments

The Iowa Dental Board recently agreed to license a woman convicted of stealing nearly $81,000 from Iowa businesses. The Board will grant the woman a certificate of registration as an Iowa dental assistant to be subject to probationary status for the three-year term of her criminal probation after being accused of theft.

The woman will apply for a certificate of registration once she completes her education and exams. Police charged her with felony first-degree theft, alleging she stole $80,950 from three Iowa companies whose properties she managed through her business. As part of an agreement with prosecutors, the woman pleaded guilty to first-degree theft. In return, she was given a suspended prison sentence, fined, and granted three years of probation.

Determining whether it is possible to garner and maintain a professional license in the face of criminal charges can be problematic. Even an accusation can cost you potential patients and, most importantly, your professional reputation. Professionals with at-risk licenses need help navigating their professional governing board requirements. How Criminal Charges Can Lead to Loss of Professional Licenses

Criminal charges can lead to dental professionals losing their license if they demonstrate poor judgment, dishonesty, or substance abuse. Such offenses include driving while impaired (DWI), assault, sex crimes, theft, fraud, and drug charges.

State licensing boards can suspend or revoke your professional license even if the alleged crime has no bearing on your work. A criminal complaint or charge can lead to an investigation into your career.

What is Involved in a Professional License Reinstatement?

A professional license reinstatement following a criminal allegation typically involves the following:

  • Application and Fees. Complete a detailed application form for license reinstatement, including information about the criminal charges and associated fees paid.
  • Explain the Allegations. Offer a written statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the criminal charges, including details about the offense, mitigating factors, and steps taken to address the situation.
  • Proof of Rehabilitation. Show tangible efforts toward rehabilitation, such as completing counseling.
  • Character References. Submit letters of recommendation attesting to your good character and suitability to practice again.
  • Criminal Records. Offer certified copies of court documents related to the criminal case, including the final disposition.
  • Continuing Education Requirements. Complete additional continuing education courses mandated by the Board.
  • Board Hearing. Attend a formal licensing board hearing to present your case, answer questions, and cross-examine witnesses.
